OUT GREEKS Documentary
Lambda 10 Project solicits interested organizations for GLBT fraternity/sorority documentary

Does your fraternity/sorority want to be featured in an upcoming documentary tentatively titled “Out Greeks?”  The 90-minute documentary will take viewers inside a traditionally straight fraternity and, or a sorority that has openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and, or transgender members. The focus of the documentary is to illustrate the alternative family structure the fraternity/sorority provides for its members – the concept of brotherhood/sisterhood, regardless of sexual orientation and, or gender identity/expression.

The Lambda 10 Project National Clearinghouse for GLBT Fraternity & Sorority Issues is currently soliciting interested fraternal organizations for the “Out Greeks” documentary. Social fraternities and sororities that primarily serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and progressive straight students are also encouraged to participate in the selection process.  The chosen fraternity/sorority must have a demonstrated commitment for leadership, academic excellence and mutual respect for diversity. Any interested fraternity/sorority should also have the necessary support and, or a commitment to negotiate necessary filming permissions from campus authorities and any applicable national organization.  If interested or have questions, please email info@lambda10.org for more information.

Produced by Lambda 10 Project founder and coordinator Shane L. Windmeyer, one of the foremost educators on GLBT issues and Greek life, the documentary will begin filming in Fall 2008/Spring 2008 and will feature a semester in the lives of the members of the fraternity/sorority. The fraternity/sorority will be the central catalyst in the documentary providing the vital support structure that holds these students together – showing the bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood, a “family.” A small production crew of only two people will follow select fraternity/sorority members onto campus different weeks during the selected semester (with any necessary approvals specified).   Schedules will be coordinated ahead of time according to the master filming schedule to ensure focus on the key areas outlined for filming: 1). Academic Involvement;  2). Leadership;  3). Community Service;  4). Campus Spirit; and  5). Student Life & Activities.

Specific attention will be paid to a college/university that showcases a diverse academic, social and extracurricular involvement with the fraternity/sorority members. The documentary will want to feature all the members interacting at various campus events to illustrate the ideals of brotherhood/sisterhood in a compelling, realistic manner.   The end goal is to have the students portrayed positively in an educational, entertaining and, ultimately, enlightening way.  As a result, the viewer will see the cultural diversity, respect and acceptance of today’s college campus.

“‘Out Greeks’ will show what it’s like to be in a LGBT in a fraternity or a sorority,” Windmeyer explained. “In just living their lives from day to day, the documentary aspires to put a face to gay Greeks in a way that hasn’t been done before. ‘Out Greeks’ will educate, entertain and, ultimately, enlighten the viewer.”

The Lambda 10 Project National Clearinghouse for GLBT Issue is an educational initiative of Campus Pride, the only national organization and online network committed to student leaders and campus organizations working to create an environment free of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexism, and genderism at colleges and universities.  More information available online at www.lambda10.org.
