OUT ON FRATERNITY ROW 2
Brotherhood Revealed

  Writing Guidelines
Step by Step Checklist to Submit your Story

Step One: Format & Length

Your story should be submitted in Microsoft Word compatible with Windows 98 or above. Submissions should not exceed 3000 words (approximately twelve typewritten double-spaced pages). Only double-spaced typewritten manuscripts will be accepted.

Step Two: Scope of Story

Stories should include whatever positive or negative information you believe is necessary for an honest, accurate, and complete account of your Greek life experience. Writings should be non-fiction and represent original, non-published works. We truly want all stories -whether they recount aspects of homophobia, leadership, sex, brotherhood, discrimination, hazing, coming out, alcohol, isolation of being closeted--let the truth be told.

Step Three: Writing Style

Stories should use descriptive scenarios to place the reader in a moment of time, reflecting emotion, giving voice to your story. We believe each story should have the end result in mind -the purpose and message. The writer should not just use narrative, that is boring. We want to allow the voices of the characters in the story to be alive (using quotes). Writers may submit stories in a variety of styles from poems, to letters, to a more traditional story format. The writer should indicate early-on in the story such descriptors as the era, time of year, location, college/university, and fraternity affiliation to orientate the reader and set the scene. View sample stories from the Lambda 10 Project.

Step Four: Editing your Story

Submit three hard copies printed single-sided
for purposes of the editing process.
Send a SASE (self-addressed, stamped 9 x12 or larger envelope with adequate postage) to return your story after editing. Writers are expected to proofread and edit the manuscript prior to submission. The story should not be a first draft. Your story may be eliminated based on the quality of the submission, so get your friends, a professor to take a look prior. You may also suggest a title for your story. Manuscripts will not be returned to the writer for any purpose other than editing (if selected).

Step Five: Confidentiality & Anonymity

  Submit the Publishing/Confidentiality Agreement.
Each writer must choose whether or not to use his real name. Each writer should indicate his real name and, or his choice of a pseudonym, if applicable. Also, the writer should have permission to use any names mentioned in his story. If not, the writer needs to use false names and indicate all instances where names have been changed in accordance with the Publishing/Confidentiality Agreement. Download a copy of the Publishing/Confidentiality Agreement.

Step Six: Photos

Submit Photo Permission Form along with any photos
  for inclusion with your story.
Please print legibly your full name on the back of the photo to be returned later. You may also scan your photo at 300dpi or higher, save as a tif file, eps file and jpeg file, and email all file types. Please indicate in the Subject Line: Your Name, OFR2 Photo Submission. Download a copy of the Photo Permission Form.

:Step Seven: Identification

Submit your name, current and permanent address,
  phone number, and email address.
This is an important request. We do not want to lose contact with writers. Please keep us informed of any changes in your contact information throughout the process.

Step Eight: Mail Your Story

Submit the manuscript on a diskette or CD Rom in a format compatible
with Microsoft Word for Windows 98 or above.
Another option would be to email the manuscript to shane@lambda10.org in a format compatible with Microsoft Word for Windows 98 or above. Please indicate in the email subject line: Your Name, OFR2 Story Submission.
